Bortolomiol: 100 Years of History in a Book

19 September 2023

The volume, published by Giunti, retraces the life of the winery’s founder Giuliano and the history of the entire Denomination.

The hardcover volume encloses memorable stories, made even more tangible by its very form. These stories can be touched, flipped through, seen, read, and are, therefore, even more authentic. “Il Sogno del Prosecco” by Ettore Gobbato is reborn in a new, more in-depth edition, published by Giunti.?It tells the story of Giuliano Bortolomiol, of an authentic family, of life's ups and downs, and of a passion passed down to the present day.

The latest version includes a foreword by Professor Attilio Scienza, which enriches the narrative by exploring, in a man-to-man dialogue, the relationship with nature and with the economic district of Prosecco Superiore, which was still in its early stages and yet Giuliano saw great potential in. The new edition also contains some current reflections on organic and sustainable practices and on the Hills that have become a UNESCO Heritage site.

"Ours is a family endeavor that has always looked to the future – says Maria Elena Bortolomiol, President of the company – But we also remain rooted in our origins and heritage. Giuliano was a significant figure for the region and for what is now the Denomination. Thanks to his expertise and vision, he helped make Prosecco Superiore an internationally successful wine".

The book, whose first edition dates back to 2008, has a long history. Luigi Veronelli, one of the most important personalities in the Italian wine scene, included Giuliano Bortolomiol among the list of “deserving individuals” in the I Semi collection of the late 1990s, which listed men and women who have enriched the land they lived and worked in. The first edition, published by Luigi Veronelli Editore under the supervision of Gian Arturo Rota, succeeded in this intent. This legacy is now being embraced by Giunti Editore to introduce it to a wider audience.

"The book is a proof that endures over time and is making a comeback even in the digital era." – adds Marco Bolasco, director of the Illustrated Books division at Giunti Editore. "We wanted to publish “Il Sogno del Prosecco” in honor of a great man and a wine, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, which has become an international Italian success story".

“Il Sogno del Prosecco” is an ode to the determination of and devotion to Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG. The company's founder turned his vocation into a profession, laying the foundation for what is now Bortolomiol. His daughters have taken the “shoot” handed down by their father and nurtured it, always aiming for the best while also promoting a wine and a territory.

GIULIANO’S GUZZI AND THE NEW WINE TOUR ITINERARY

Giuliano's memory and legacy are also celebrated by the company through the restoration of the founder’s Guzzi motorcycle, an undisputed symbol of his life's journey. The motorcycle, along with the dedicated video mapping, serve as the beginning of a wine tourism itinerary: a path located within the Parco della Filandetta Wine & Art Farm that will engage visitors in a multisensory experience to discover the history of the Denomination.

The new edition of the book and the video mapping were finally presented during an event that included an introductory talk and a Wine Dinner where the wines from the Fondatore Collection were tasted: "70th ANNIVERSARY” Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore Extra Brut Millesimato?Rive di Col San Martino?2020; Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore Extra Brut Millesimato?Rive San Pietro di Barbozza; and the organic Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore Brut Millesimato?Ius naturae.

GRANDE CUVÈE DEL FONDATORE
VALDOBBIADENE D.O.C.G. PROSECCO SUPERIORE EXTRA BRUT MILLESIMATO RIVE SAN PIETRO DI BARBOZZA

Bortolomiol’s entire sparkling wine expertise has been deployed for this challenge: to continue the legacy of Giuliano Bortolomiol, a skilled sparkling wine maker and great experimenter who was always in search of new paths in the name of high quality. This Grande Cuvée is dedicated to him, the first to obtain a Brut from Prosecco: a Rive produced exclusively with grapes from the San Pietro di Barbozza vineyard, an Extra Brut and Millesimato wine that best represents the unique characteristics of each vintage. These characteristics inspired the colors of the packaging: the dark brown of the earth and the light blue of the sky.

IUS NATURAE
VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE D.O.C.G. BRUT MILLESIMATO VINO BIOLOGICO

For years, Bortolomiol has embarked on a journey that led to the conversion of the family vineyards, located in the heart of Valdobbiadene and within the Parco della Filandetta, to meet EU standards for organic wine growing. Bortolomiol has always believed in sustainability and respect for the environment: the winery has chosen to produce a Brut version for its strongly international appeal, a Millesimato type to highlight the spontaneous expression of the characteristics of every harvest. An Ius naturae wine, made in accordance with the "law of nature", which is the foundation of every human law.
