Fattoria Le Pupille is located in Maremma in southern Tuscany, a territory along the Tyrrhenian Sea that in the past 35 years has gained acclaim for its wines, especially those made from Sangiovese.
The winery’s first official label, Morellino Riserva 1978, was released in 1982,
and the turning point for Fattoria Le Pupille was in 1985, when current owner Elisabetta
Geppetti became the winery’s director. She started with one clear, simple goal:
to make great wines and distinguish Le Pupille’s production with elegance and
purity of expression.
She planted Cabernet Sauvignon next to Sangiovese and updated the cellars and
winemaking techniques to incorporate modern and innovative methods.
In
1987, the winery’s flagship wine Saffredi Maremma Toscana IGT was released
for the first time. It quickly became legendary, carrying the name of Maremma
outside Tuscan borders to international acclaim. Fattoria Le Pupille’s other important label remains the first one the winery ever released,
Morellino di Scansano. Today, the estate and winery are comprised of four
hundred and twenty hectares (1038 acres) of property, seventy-five of which are
vineyards and twenty are cultivated with other traditional Tuscan crops like
olive trees and wheat. Enologist Luca D’Attoma leads the wine production
alongside Elisabetta Geppetti.
After nearly thirty years since Elisabetta began following her passion and making
wine, the “Lady of Morellino” and ambassador of Maremma holds fast to
her enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit for making great wines.
