Marsala

At the end of the 1700s, English ships sailed the Mediterranean –Sicily as well as Spain and Portugal – in search of power, wines and food to sell back home. The port of Marsala offered them safe harbor and a good supply of local wine: whites made with native Grillo, Cataratto and Ansonica, and reds produced with local Perricone, Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese.

Wine was aged in wooden barrels and filled up with wine from the current year to maintain its level, since those inside the barrels loose a certain amount of liquid every year due to evaporation. In order for them to ship it, the English added in liquor and the final product became popular in their homeland as it was similar to wines that were already imported from Spain and Portugal, such as Sherry and Madeira, but with a much affordable price.

This is how Marsala was born and its history has reached us thanks to a great winery that has handed down its tradition: Florio.

  • Day 1: Morning

Private guided winery tour at Donnafugata winery

    Art, passion and timeless wines

The name “Donnafugata” is from the famous novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa and refers to “a woman on the run” who found shelter among the vineyards. This image inspired the company logo wanted by the Rallo family, who has been producing wine since 1851 in their Etna, Contessa Entellina, Vittoria, Pantelleria and Marsala estates.

Aside from tradition and high quality, the winery is famous for the signature labels created by the famous international artist Stefano Vitale and strongly desired by Gabriella Rallo. Each label is a unique work of art, a small and colorful treasure.

Donnafugata produces timeless wines, ranging from whites to rosés to reds. Generations of enthusiasts have been captivated by Passito di Pantelleria “Ben Ryé”, “Chiarandà” or “Mille e una notte”, as well as “Anthìlia”, “Lumera” and “Sedàra”

The tour include a visit of the historic cellars, passing from the underground barrel cellar to reach the Sala delle Botti

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Private guided winery tour at Florio winery

From Garibaldi to Targa Florio and continuous innovation: Florio embodies the history of Marsala in the world.

In 1832, Vincenzo Florio purchased a stretch of beach in front of the port of Marsala and founded Cantine Florio a year later. He then set up a naval fleet to transport his Marsala, later branching off to shipping textile, iron and steel, tuna and sulfur. Meanwhile, in 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Marsala and conquered the entire Sicily, which was then annexed to the rising Kingdom of Italy. Florio was the Kingdom’s pride, producing fifty thousand barrels of spirits and three thousand of wine every year. Targa Florio, an important car racing event, was born and Lalique, an eminent figure of the Art Nouveau movement, was commissioned to create the award plate.

Together with its various properties, Florio has been continuously innovating, standing out for its technology, acquisitions and new products that have enabled the winery to widen its range. It has been owned by Duca di Salaparuta S.p.A since 2003, after merging with the historic Sicilian brand Aziende Casa Vinicola Duca di Salaparuta S.p.A.

The visit include a guided tour of the cellars folowed by a tasting of 4 new Marsala Riserva Florio wines accompanied by delicious nibbles.
