A region that has changed its destiny, through its people and through its wines.

Apulia boasts a very ancient vine history: it is believed to have been present even before the colonization of the Greeks, who introduced the albarello cultivation method which is widely used until today.

The ancient Romans enjoyed Apulian wine in their banquets: it was shipped by sea from the port of Taranto where it was kept in cellars dug into the rock along the coast while waiting to be taken on board.

When we think of Apulia, we almost immediately think of rosé wines but, under the warm sun of this marvelous region, native white grape varieties also grow: we can mention Bombino Bianco, Malvasia, Verdeca, Bianco di Alessano. As well as red varieties like Negroamaro, Primitivo, Uva di Troia, Malvasia Nera, Susumaniello and Ottavianello. There is no shortage of international varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Until about twenty years ago, Apulia was famous for the production of blended wines that were exported to Northern Italy. But thanks to the willpower of some producers, who have begun to produce quality wines, this region’s destiny completely changed.

Apulian cuisine is based on high-quality ingredients: the freshest fish from the coast, excellent meat from the country, vegetables harvested from its gardens and boundless fields stretching near the farms. Among the most typical dishes of the region are Orecchiette pasta with turnip tops; Tiella barese made with rice, potatoes and mussels; Chicory with fava bean puree; Bombette, fresh pork rolls usually stuffed with cheese; and Octopus Meatballs. And Apulian cheeses and cured meats deserve a book of their own: just think of the Burrata di Andria, capocollo di Martina Franca and lard from Faedo.

  • Day 1: Morning

Private Guided Winery Tour at Tenute Rubino

Recovering the viticultural potential of a territory with a rich past and a modern entrepreneurial vision.

The values of his family and the love for his land urged Tommaso Rubino, in the 1980s, to recover a wine heritage that was in danger of being lost.

Over the years, he has been joined by his son Luigi and his wife Romina and, together, they have led Tenute Rubino to become an exemplary Apulian winery and a reference in the Italian wine scene.

They grow local varieties such as Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera and Bianca, Primitivo, Susumaniello, as well as non-native grapes like Chardonnay, Vermentino and Aleatico.

Environmental sustainability, in the vineyard as in the cellar, is the foundation of the Rubino family’s philosophy. Work in the vineyard and in the cellar has one goal: to interpret and bring out what the fruit is capable of expressing. This practice brings forth elegant wines with excellent structure that are appreciated even by the most demanding palates.

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Guided Tour at Masseria Li Veli

The return of ancient native vines: the distinctive feature of one of the largest wineries in Southern Italy.

Masseria Li Veli has always served as a model to Southern Italy, thanks to its ancient owner, Marquis Antonio de Viti de Marco, an economist, a university professor and Deputy to the Kingdom of Italy. For the last twenty years, it has been led by the Falvo family, important figures of the wine world boasting great experience in the sector.

The Masseria is located in the area of Salento, halfway between Brindisi and Lecce, on the ruins of a late medieval building. The few traces of this historic construction have been integrated into the current structure, a proof of its ancient past.

The Falvo family has been devoted to the cultivation of native grapes to safeguard this priceless wine heritage.

The main variety is Negroamaro, which yields five different wines Primerose, Primonero, Passamante, Pezzo Morgana and MLV; followed by Primitivo and Susumaniello.

The only white variety is the local Verdeca, vinified in purity and exclusively aged in stainless steel, which was awarded with a Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso in 2020.

The guided tour of the winery begins among the vineyards, then covering the entire production process to finally reach the winemaking and aging area.

The tour will end with a tasting of 5 iconic wines.
