Discover Gattinara

Gattinara Territory

At first glance, some of the vineyards above the medieval town of Gattinara bear a striking resemblance to the hillsides of Barolo which lay 90 miles to the south. Tall-growing Nebbiolo vines hug an ensemble of steep, rounded slopes with exposure in all directions.

But less-apparent differences, in climate and soil, give the wines of Gattinara their own distinctive character. The Alps loom closer, most notably the glacial peak of Monte Rosa, cooling the nights and bringing in frequent rain.

The earth itself is nothing like Barolo’s clay and sand: the ground is a tough, stony mixture of red volcanic porphyry and granite.

Private Guided Winery Tour at Travaglini

In the heart of Gattinara, in northern Piedmont, Travaglini winery was founded in the 1920s by Clemente Travaglini.

Over the many years as a continuously family-owned winery, Travaglini has established itself as the most esteemed producer of traditional, limited-production Gattinara DOCG wine made from Nebbiolo. It is the only Nebbiolo appellation in Piedmont’s northern region.

The family’s passion and commitment to winemaking has not diminished over the generations. Today, Cinzia Travaglini, the founder’s great-granddaughter, manages day-to-day operations at the winery. Her husband Massimo Collauto is the chief winemaker, a role he inherited from his late father-in-law and beloved mentor, Giancarlo.

You will visit the ancient cellar where Gattinara Riserva is aged and walk amongst the large wooden casks that house various wines. The tour will end with a private room tasting of some of the most representative wines of the winery paired with local cheeses and salami.

The restaurant offers a rich menu that combines traditional recipes with the most modern cooking techniques. Ample space is devoted to lake fish, which is always fresh, and to the flavours of the nearby Ossola valleys and the plains of Novara.

Sophisticated dishes accompanied by an excellent selection of wines, attentive service, a breathtaking view over Lake Maggiore and meticulous presentation: these are the ingredients of the menu at Ristorante Verbano, ideal for romantic lunch and relaxing breaks.

  • Day 1: Afternoon

Enjoy free time on Isola Bella

After lunch your captain will ferry you to Isola Bella where you will have free time to visit the Botanical Gardens and the Baroque palace (tickets to the Botanical Gardens and the palace are paid directly at the entrance).

The island is a natural treasure made even richer by human intervention; it has always been one of the favourite visitor attractions of Lake Maggiore, not to be missed if you want unparalleled views of the lake and its surroundings.

Isola Bella is dominated by its grand Baroque palace, along with a luxuriant Italian-style garden, which reaches a height of 37 metres and is laid out on ten terraces. Many parts of the palace are open to visitors: richly furnished rooms and opulent salons embellished with priceless artworks.

Your captain will take you back to the main land in Stresa where your private driver will wait to transfer you back to your accommodation in the early evening.
