Zisola is situated in southeastern Sicily, near Noto, the famous Baroque jewel-box, in the Nero d’Avola mother-country: a land rich in history and natural beauty, protected by Unesco as cultural heritage site. The Mazzei identified the latent potential of this land rich with history, culture and charm, and started an ambitious winemaking project in 2003.
In this enchanting spot, surrounded by a charming scenario of olive trees, citrus groves and almond trees, the vineyards of Zisola are perfectly placed, cultivated in the traditional “alberello” style, with a density of 5,500 plants per hectare. Nero d’Avola prevails, sided by Syrah, Petit Verdot, Grillo and Catarratto.
The climate is insular Mediterranean with mild winters, hot and dry summers, with a cooler breeze only next to the Ionian Sea: Zisola surely benefits from this cooling breeze thanks to its altitude, 90 – 130 meters above sea level. The soil, rich in limestone and rock fragments, gives to wines a special complexity, elegance, thickness and a refined texture.
Starting from 2023 the Estate is certified as organic. Since the very beginning the vineyards are managed in a natural way, without any use of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. The soils are fertilized by “sovesci” (green manures), mechanical burial of wild herbs and reconverting the organic waste into compost.
