Casale del Giglio: A Sustainable Vision

02 July 2025

In the heart of the Agro Pontino, just 50 kilometers south of Rome, Casale del Giglio stands as a compelling example of how heritage and innovation can converge under the banner of sustainability. The recently published Sustainability Report marks a significant milestone for the estate, affirming its commitment to the Equalitas standard – a rigorous framework built around the three pillars of environmental, economic, and social sustainability

A Pioneering Legacy

Founded in 1967 by Dino Santarelli and now led by his son Antonio, Casale del Giglio has long been a pioneer in Lazio’s winemaking scene. With no local oenological tradition to follow, the estate embraced experimentation, planting 57 grape varieties and collaborating with ampelographers and researchers to identify the best fit for the unique microclimate of the Agro Pontino. This experimental ethos still underpins the winery’s philosophy today.

Sustainability from Soil to Cellar

Casale del Giglio’s environmental efforts are multi-layered and deeply integrated. From mechanical weeding and green manuring to water-saving drip irrigation managed through conductivity probes, the estate treats natural resources with measured care. Pest control is guided by climatic data and regional bulletins, favoring sexual confusion techniques and microbial alternatives over synthetic products.

Biodiversity is actively nurtured with ecological corridors, pollinator-friendly crops, and native grape varieties like Bellone. The estate also monitors biodiversity indicators in water, air, and soil at least once every three years.

In the cellar, sustainability continues through minimized use of additives, a traceability plan, energy-efficient maintenance, and eco-friendly packaging – lighter bottles, recycled paper, cork closures.

Economic and Ethical Sustainability

Casale del Giglio adopts a resource-conscious approach to investments, selecting solutions with the least environmental impact when quality is equivalent. In 2023, over €269,000 was invested in winery improvements – from packaging lines to racking pumps and barrels.

Socially, the estate maintains a strong internal culture, with formalized ethical guidelines, equal opportunities policies, and long-standing employment contracts (notably, 65% of employees are over 50, and 56% are women). Training, workplace safety, and profit-sharing bonuses are part of a broader strategy that places people at the center of sustainable growth.

A Culture of Transparency and Outreach

Sustainability is also a communicative act. Casale del Giglio uses its website, social media, and on-site hospitality to share its values with the public. Initiatives like the archaeological support of the Satricum site and over 600 wine tasting counters held in 2023 testify to a proactive role in cultural and social engagement.
